Author guide

For people who write quizzes and assessments in ARENA Studio. ARENA is in beta (2026-11-05). This guide describes only what the beta build does.

Before you start: read Getting started with ARENA. It covers the install, your first quiz, the support channel and how ARENA handles data. This guide goes further.

ARENA runs inside your CRM sub-account, and Studio calls the platform "CRM" throughout.

1. Open Studio

  1. Open ARENA from its page in your CRM sub-account.
  2. Wait while Studio shows Connecting to your CRM.

If you see Open ARENA from inside your CRM, you opened a saved link. Open ARENA from the sub-account instead. If you see ARENA is not installed for this location, ask an admin to install it.

Studio has four sections. Admins see all four. Other users see Quizzes.

SectionWhat it holdsWho sees it
QuizzesYour quizzes, and for each published quiz: live session, assignments and attemptsAdmins and users
CRM syncWhat is waiting to be written to your CRM, and the audit logAdmins
SettingsProvisioning and ThemeAdmins
Data requestsExport or erase one participant's ARENA dataAdmins

Only an admin or the quiz's author can publish that quiz.

The Get started checklist

An admin sees Get started above the sections until an admin chooses Dismiss the checklist. It holds:

Users who are not admins see Setup is not finished, ask an admin while setup is not done.

2. Create a quiz

  1. Open Quizzes.
  2. Choose New quiz.
  3. Type a Quiz title. Studio will not save without one.
  4. Choose Save draft.

After the first save, every change saves itself within about two seconds. The line under the editor tells you the state: Saving…, All changes saved., or a note that your changes are kept on this device and ARENA will try again.

If someone else saves the same quiz at the same time, Studio shows a note with the time. Your changes are saved, and the other version is kept as an earlier version. Choose Dismiss to carry on.

If you close the editor with unsaved changes, Studio asks first. Choose Stay or Leave.

Choose the modes

  1. Open Quiz settings.
  2. Under Modes and capture, tick what the quiz is for:
    • Live sessions: you host it live from Studio, for a webinar, a course session, a meeting or a training. See the host guide.
    • Self-paced assessment: the same quiz also works as a personal link you send to a contact, or a public link.
    • Scored funnel: a lead quiz on a funnel page.

You must tick at least one.

3. Write questions

Each question has a Question text. Pick a Question type:

Type in StudioUse it when
Single choiceOne answer is right. Give 2 to 6 answers and mark the Correct answer.
Multiple choiceMore than one answer is right. Mark each correct one.
True or falseA statement. Choose True or False for The statement is.
Type the answerThe player types it. Add each Accepted answer you will take. Tick Ignore accents to accept "cafe" for "café".
NumberThe answer is a number. Set the Expected value and a Tolerance, Plus or minus or Percent.
Opinion pollYou want opinions. It has no correct answer and scores nothing.

For each question you can also set:

Use Add question and Remove question. To reorder, drag a question by its handle, or use Move question {n} up and Move question {n} down. With the keyboard, press Alt plus Up or Down. Press Ctrl or Cmd plus S to save now.

Fix problems before you publish

Studio marks each problem on the question, for example Mark exactly one answer correct. or Give 2 to 6 answers. Publishing waits until every marked problem is fixed. A timed scoring mode also needs a time limit on every question, or a quiz default.

4. Scoring and rules

In Quiz settings, under Scoring, choose a Scoring mode:

ModeIn plain words
SpeedA right answer scores more the faster it comes, down to half the points.
AccuracyA right answer scores the same however fast it comes.
Linear decayThe score falls in a straight line as time runs out, to a small minimum.
Exponential decayThe score falls fast at first, then slowly.
Negative markingA wrong answer costs points.

Then set:

No timer under Timing removes the countdown. Speed and decay modes then score as accuracy.

A change to scoring or timing applies to new attempts. Attempts already started keep the settings of their version.

5. Outcomes and capture

Mastery tiers

When a contact finishes a quiz, ARENA gives the contact one tier tag from their score:

ScoreTag
80 percent or morearena:tier:mastered
50 percent or morearena:tier:developing
Below 50 percentarena:tier:needs-support

ARENA removes the other two tier tags at the same time. These cut-offs are the same for every quiz. Use the tags in your workflows: a Contact Tag trigger on arena:played or a tier tag needs no premium step. ARENA's workflow steps are an option. See the workflows guide.

Ask for name and email

Under Modes and capture, Ask for name and email has three choices: Required, Optional and Off. The player sees Save your result with an email box and a consent tick box. The player sees the result either way.

ARENA saves a name and email only if the player ticks the box. Turn it Off and visitors to a scored funnel stay anonymous. Then ARENA has no contact to tag or write fields on.

The result page

You can set Call to action label and Call to action link (https). The player sees them as a link on the result page. Tick Show per-question feedback on the result page to show each question's result.

6. Publish and share

  1. Choose Publish. Studio shows Published.
  2. Copy the Public link or the Embed code.

Every publish makes a new version, so an attempt always matches the questions it was asked. To change a published quiz, edit it and publish again.

Embed in a funnel page

Paste the Embed code into a Custom Code element on your CRM funnel page. It is an iframe that fills the width of the element.

Send a personal link

A personal link opens the quiz as one contact, so they do not type their name again. It works for 7 days.

Under Assign this quiz (it appears once the quiz is published), choose one of these:

For each contact, ARENA writes the link to the contact field arena_assessment_link, then adds the tag arena:assessment-assigned. ARENA sends nothing. Your own CRM workflow sends the email or SMS. The workflows guide explains it. This tag route has no workflow-step fee; ARENA's Send a quiz step is the premium option there.

The Contacts assigned list shows each contact's status: Waiting to write the link, Writing the link, Link written and tag added, Failed or Held. Choose Retry on a failed one.

Contacts tagged after you set the rule are assigned when ARENA hears of the new tag from your CRM. If a newly tagged contact is not assigned, assign them by Contact ID.

If a contact opens a link after 7 days, they can ask for a new one from the page. ARENA writes a fresh link and adds the tag again, so your workflow sends it.

7. Read results

Open a published quiz. Attempts lists the 50 most recent. Each row shows Who, Score, Result (Passed or Failed), Time taken, Completed and CRM sync. Anonymous players show as Anonymous.

What lands on the contact

For a player ARENA can identify (by name and email, or by personal link), ARENA writes to the contact:

FieldHolds
arena_last_quiz_titleThe last quiz played
arena_last_score_pctThe last score, in percent
arena_last_passedtrue or false
arena_last_played_atWhen they last played
arena_total_attemptsHow many attempts
arena_best_score_pctThe best score
arena_avg_score_pctThe average score
arena_mastery_tiermastered, developing or needs-support
arena_assessment_linkTheir personal link. ARENA writes it when you assign a quiz.

ARENA also adds the tag arena:played, the tier tag, and a note on the contact's timeline. ARENA owns these fields, so a manual edit is overwritten by the next result.

The CRM sync queue

CRM sync (admins) shows Waiting to sync, Oldest waiting and Need attention. A job that needs attention lists its steps (Contact, Fields, Tags added, Tags removed) and the Error. Choose Retry to queue it again. The Audit log lists every write ARENA made to your CRM.

8. Settings for admins

Settings > Provisioning lists ARENA's set-up steps, Contact fields and Tags, each Done, Waiting, Failed or Running. When all are done it says Every provisioning step is done. If a step failed, choose Repair. Repair runs the failed and waiting steps again and leaves finished ones alone.

Settings > Theme sets the colours, fonts and corner radius players see. A value left empty comes from your brand, then from the ARENA default. Studio checks colour contrast and offers adjusted colours.

Data requests: choose how to find the participant (Email or CRM contact id), then Export or Erase. Erase asks you to type ERASE. It removes access at once and cannot be undone. The list shows each request's progress and its 30-day deadline.
